Behind the Scenes

Every year, the Saltwater Freshwater Festival comes alive through music, culture and community — but behind the scenes, it’s the volunteers who help make it all possible. As the festival returns in 2026, their contribution remains one of the most important and inspiring parts of the event.

Volunteers play a vital role across the entire festival site. From welcoming visitors at the gates to assisting Elders, supporting performers, guiding families through workshops and helping run marketplace and children’s activities, they ensure the day flows smoothly and safely. Their presence helps create the warm, inclusive atmosphere the festival is known for.

For many volunteers, being part of the festival is much more than a one-day role. It’s a chance to stand on Country, contribute to a culturally significant event, and celebrate the strength of local Aboriginal communities. Some volunteers return year after year, proud to help share culture, support artists and be part of something that uplifts the entire region.

Volunteering also offers a unique behind-the-scenes insight into how a major cultural event is created. Volunteers work closely with staff, stallholders, performers and cultural practitioners, often forming friendships and gaining valuable skills along the way. Many describe the experience as grounding, joyful and deeply meaningful.

The 2026 festival will offer volunteer opportunities across logistics, hospitality, cultural support, workshops, youth spaces and more — with roles open to people of all ages and backgrounds. Whether you’re passionate about culture, eager to learn or simply keen to give back, volunteering is a powerful way to be part of the Saltwater Freshwater story.
