Dancing On Country
For dancers taking the stage at the Saltwater Freshwater Festival, the experience is far more than a performance — it’s a powerful act of cultural continuity. Each year, dance groups from across the Mid North Coast come together to honour their ancestors, share their stories and energise the audience through movement.
Performers describe the feeling of dancing on Country as grounding and deeply emotional. The festival offers a rare opportunity to showcase both traditional and contemporary styles, giving dancers of all ages a platform to shine. Many young performers take the stage for the first time, supported by Elders and cultural mentors who have passed down the stories, songs and steps that shape each dance.
Backstage, the sense of community is just as strong. Dance troupes share space, swap stories, paint up together and build connections that last long after the festival ends. For many, it’s the highlight of their year — a chance to be seen, celebrated and connected through culture.
